Paracanoe

SCF Paracanoe Programme

Paracanoe was introduced in Singapore under Singapore Canoe Federation (SCF) in 2014. Since then, the programme has welcomed many people with special needs.

Helmed by a dedicated team of volunteers, differently abled canoe enthusiasts can engage in weekly sessions at MacRitchie Reservoir. The programme serves to benefit participants in nurturing their passion and development in the sport, achieving therapeutic benefits, as well as in providing a platform for meaningful social interactions and integration. Kayaking sessions include technical training, while also incorporating some land training that focuses on technique, and strength and conditioning. Training programmes are tailored to individual participants to meet unique needs of each athlete.

Since its inception, the SCF Paracanoe programme has seen growing inclusion of the discipline in SCF’s competition calendar, allowing its athletes to take part in competitions and annual events such as the Singapore Canoe Marathon, Singapore Canoe Sprint Championships, and the Pesta Sukan. The set up of the Para Sport Academy in 2022 also offers athletes with impairment another avenue to pursue paracanoeing.

With an increasing number of opportunities for sport development, SCF’s goal is to see its para athletes represent Singapore internationally, and eventually compete at the major Games.

Para Sport Academy

On 10 March 2022, the creation of a new Para Sport Academy was announced in Parliament. Intended to be an enabling platform through which more persons with disabilities can build their self-confidence and reach their fullest potential and form a new generation of para-athletes who will go on to represent Singapore, the Para Sport Academy, which is run by ActiveSG, will have paracanoe as one of its disciplines.

In line with current rules set by the International Canoe Federation for paracanoe, the Para Sport Academy’s paid paracanoe programme, run every Sunday from 9 - 11am at Marina Reservoir, accepts only persons with lower limb impairment.

Interested participants may sign up directly through the ActiveSG Canoe Academy here.
